Westward Pathfinder has been supporting employers for 20 years with particular emphasis on targeting employees with below level 2 qualifications and basic skills needs. We currently engage with around 100 employers each year and work with approximately 200 employees from these employers.
We pride ourselves on our flexible approach to our provision and this is dependent on the employers’ preferences. For example we can offer group tutoring, one to one tutoring, one to one assessments, progress reviews for employee and employer, supported on-line delivery through our Learndirect contract, group IT training taking in our own laptops, delivery of on-line underpinning knowledge using our own laptops in the employers’ premises.
"Leaders and Managers plan the provision well to meet the diverse needs of learners and the particular vocational needs of employers" ... (Ofsted Grade 2 Report 2015).
Historically our focus has been on delivering to SMEs and micro businesses in rural areas of north Devon, however following our expansion we also deliver Work Based Learning provision in larger conurbations including Exeter and Torbay. Sectors we cover include, Health and Social Care, Retail, Customer Service, IT, Business Administration, Team Leading and Management.
Example of our recent work with an emphasis on the needs of a local employer:
In March 2015 John Fowler Holidays were recruiting for the summer season. Ten of our long term unemployed clients were recruited onto the two week pre-employment course with the manager of John Fowlers coming along to the course on the first day and the last day. After the pre-employment course all were given a day’s work experience and an interview with all ten being offered jobs. We continue to help the employees and employer by working with the employees to achieve an NVQ in Customer Services.
Other employers for who we’ve successfully delivered a similar service include Tesco (4 new stores), Morrisons (3 new stores), Asda, Wetherspoons and Dunelm Mill. In addition we have delivered the service to many local employers in the Care, Construction, Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism sectors.
This activity allows us to develop a strong relationship with the employer which we utilise to sell our Work Based Learning and Apprenticeship provision as an option for all their staff. We also use the above examples to demonstrate that we have a successful track record in delivering WBL when we are engaging SME’s and Micro-businesses.
